Achieving peak performance is a concept often reserved for elite athletes. But everyone can strive for peak performance in their own lives, whether beginning an exercise program, going on a job interview, giving a presentation, creating a work of art, or many other life experiences. Elite athletes have coaches to help them perform at their best. Here is a checklist you can follow each day to unlock optimal performance in your life’s goals and demands:

Discipline – Discipline is the repeated work that provides the bridge between stated goals and actual accomplishments. Make a mental list of what you want to accomplish each day, and then make it happen.

Communication – Effective communication breeds understanding, community and human connection. Realize that everyone perceives the world in his or her own way, and let this realization guide the way we relate to one another. Work to maintain a dialogue with family, friends and colleagues.

Punctuality – Punctuality is the greatest form of respect. Being on time shows responsibility, dependability and integrity. It both reveals and builds discipline. Make it a priority to be on time.

Accountability – Honor your responsibilities, whether or not you feel like it. Take ownership of your mistakes, as well as your successes.

Unselfishness – Even the smallest acts of kindness ripple outward and eventually come back to you. The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wrote that kindness in words creates confidence; kindness in thinking creates profoundness; and kindness in giving creates love. Practice random acts of kindness.

Lifelong learning – Irish poet WB Yeats wrote that education is not the filling of a pail; it is the lighting of a fire. You will never know everything about anything — especially those things you are passionate about. So take every opportunity to learn.

Physical fitness – There are no magic elixirs. But exercise is as close as we come. Regular exercise increases energy, boosts mood, supports immune-system function, promotes effective sleep, and much more. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.

Accept the challenge to get better. Each moment is a new opportunity!
